Hi, I’m Ellie Van Pelt.
I’m an animal portrait artist based in Seattle, Washington. My work sits at the intersection of science, art, and a deep appreciation for the living world.
My Background
My journey began at the University of Washington, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Physiology with a minor in Global Health. I went on to study scientific illustration through Rhode Island School of Design's (RISD) Natural Science Illustration certificate program. Today, I’m a proud member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI).
My Inspiration
While I love illustrating mammals of all shapes and sizes, farmed animals hold a truly special place in my heart—especially cows! My love for these gentle creatures goes beyond the sketchbook: every week, you can find me volunteering at a local farm sanctuary, spending hands-on time with rescued cows, goats, bunnies, and more. These quiet, joyful moments directly inform my illustration practice, allowing me to capture not just anatomical detail, but individual character and heart.
